Interestingly, I have never seen a kestrel catch a bird before. They are typically ground hunters: they hover in the air until they spot prey on the ground and then dive on it. They usually catch mice, voles, lizards, and they are deadly on small snakes. I don’t think they have any strategy for aerial hunting (like falcons or Cooper’s hawks, for example), so this one must have surprised the bird on the ground or maybe in a bush or on a low branch. Perhaps it was a fledgling blundering around on the ground that didn’t yet have the sense or coordination to fly off or had been previously injured. Anyway, great footage of one of our prettiest (and maybe smallest) raptors. Thank you for posting it.
